Reisjunk acquired: the end of an era or the start of something new?

Reisjunk.nl, one of the largest travel platforms in the Netherlands, is no longer in the hands of its founders Greg and Irene. The platform has been acquired by Kompas Publishing, a media company based in Haarlem with over a hundred employees and a portfolio focused on lifestyle, families, seniors and education. Travel was not yet part of that portfolio. Until now.

The acquisition was announced on 12 May 2026. The deal was facilitated by Match Plan, an advisory firm specialising in business acquisitions. Official communications describe the move as a “new growth phase” and Reisjunk “joining” Kompas Publishing. More plainly: Reisjunk has been sold.

What is Reisjunk?

What started as a personal travel blog by two passionate travellers grew over twelve years into a content platform with a large community, contributions from external bloggers, photographers and creators, and a reach that few Dutch travel sites can match. Reisjunk always focused on the independent traveller: practical, accessible and community-driven.

What’s changing?

According to official communications, Greg and Irene will remain “strategically involved” with the platform. What that means in practice remains unclear. Kompas Publishing has announced plans to invest in travel videos, new travel tools and broader distribution through its existing technology infrastructure.

Whether that will strengthen or fundamentally change the community-driven nature of Reisjunk remains to be seen. Media companies that acquire content platforms tend to have different priorities than the founders who built them.

What does this mean for the Dutch travel blogging world?

The acquisition signals that Dutch travel content is worth serious money. At the same time, it marks a shift: from an independent platform to part of a media portfolio. It’s a development the travel blogging world has seen before, but rarely this visibly.

For Reisjunk readers, nothing changes on the surface for now. Whether that’s still true a year from now depends on what Kompas Publishing does with its investment.
